About MNIPA

How we started

MNIPA was founded by a group of independent physicians in the fall of 2016. They were concerned by:

• the rising cost of health care;
• worsening red tape from insurers and government payers;
• tightening constraints on the practice of medicine;
• patients losing access to the physician of their choosing.

As the health care market consolidates and smaller medical groups are forced out, costs keep climbing, and all of us pay for it. MNIPA was founded to help reverse that trend.

Our mission

MNIPA was founded by Minnesota physicians dedicated to preserving the independence of medicine and medical practice. Our mission is to help physicians keep control of clinical decisions and practice management, so they can pursue the best possible outcomes for their patients without undue influence from health plans or provider networks.

Why independents matter

Health care is a business, and always has been. Independent physicians run their own practices, so they watch the bottom line closely. They work hard every day to keep costs low while keeping outcomes strong.

When independent practices fold or are bought out, patients lose choices and prices tend to go up. That is not a coincidence.

What we believe

• Patients choose their doctor. Patients must be free to seek care with any licensed physician, regardless of where that physician practices.
• Physicians can practice independently. Physicians have a right to practice outside of large, entrenched multi-specialty groups.
• Buyers get competition. Individuals and companies purchasing health care have a right to choice and competition in the marketplace.

How we work

MNIPA is nonpartisan and focuses on one thing: independent practice. We meet with legislators and their staff, send letters and testimony, and join coalitions with patient groups, pharmacists and others when our goals line up. We work with Minnesota's elected officials in both parties, at the Capitol in St. Paul and in Washington.
